In many countries around the world, including Africa, both metal and wood were used before Plastic Core Trays were introduced.

The challenges with these trays are widely understood.  Aluminium trays were found to rot when sulphide bearing ores broke down in them.  This meant that old core from programs going back many years may have to be re-boxed as the older trays rotted out and the metals corroded away due to the attack of the sulphides ores - even when stored in sheds.  Wood trays may also have to be re-boxed at regular intervals if sulphide ores or termites were present.  This is both time consuming and costly.  These old style metal and wood core trays also make stacking and storing trays on site a challenge due to the uneven surfaces and various sizes involved.

In recent years some of the more innovative exploration/mining companies have changed over to The ‘Discoverer®’ Plastic Core Tray.  They did this because of the strength of the plastic as well as the many features which make it so easy to use out on site.

The ‘Discoverer®’ allows the core to sit below the lip of the trays, and the trays to be stacked and bundled efficiently for transportation. Drainage holes and a unique ribbing design mean that any excess moisture is quickly drained off.  Rough marking areas for writing on, and hand slots all allow ease of use and lifting.  The new Series 2 Discoverer® has the additional benefit of being able to both Stack and Nest, giving huge savings in both freight and handling.  The trays are universally liked by the people who handle them.

The Discoverer® Core Tray, a world class tray for exploration and mining sites who want to ensure their valuable core is protected long term, whilst delivering first class workplace practice and efficiencies out in the field.
